Embarking on our first significant shakedown ride, we set our sights on riding Arizona’s infamous El Camino del Diablo, taking on the Devil Road. Gratitude, as much as relief, filled our hearts as our friends Beth and Ken joined the expedition, their Mercedes Sprinter van housing Floki, their loyal canine companion. The trio quickly evolved into our unwavering Support Network, following us diligently in their chase truck – a reassuring presence throughout our journey.
The Devil Road weaves a tapestry of history, culture, and rugged landscapes in the heart of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, providing a stellar backdrop for our epic adventure. With roots dating back to indigenous trails used by Native American tribes, this historic route gained prominence as Spanish explorers, missionaries, and traders navigated its arid expanse. Over the centuries, it evolved into a perilous trade route connecting Sonora, Mexico, to California, leaving tales of hardship and survival.
The route’s moniker, the Devil Highway, echoes the challenges faced by those who dared to traverse its unforgiving terrain. The stark beauty of the Sonoran Desert envelopes travelers in a dramatic panorama of cacti-studded expanses, vast sand dunes, and rocky outcrops. El Camino del Diablo, a crucible of history and nature, beckoned us to explore its captivating blend of cultural heritage and untamed wilderness. 🏜️🌵
